Spotting the American White Ibis in Key Largo’s Mangroves

Stunning mangrove landscapes

Field Note Submitted by:

Chrissy Clary

Ah, Key Largo! A slice of paradise where the air smells like saltwater and adventure is just a boat ride away. We rented a canal-side rental, one day when we were heading out a flash of white catches my eye. It’s an American white ibis, elegantly playing in the mangroves like it owns the place. These delightful birds, with their striking plumage and long, curved bills, are a staple of Florida's wetlands. As they hunt for crustaceans and insects, they’re not just adding charm to the scenery—they're helping to keep the ecosystem balanced. I grabbed this video, and it serves as a sweet reminder of nature's beauty, which we all should cherish and protect.

Wildlife Watching in the Mangroves:

Glide through winding channels and you’ll spot the signature curved bill of the American white ibis (Eudocimus albus) probing mudbanks for crustaceans. But don’t blink—alongside ibis you might glimpse herons, egrets, and even a passing manatee. These Key Largo mangroves form a living buffet and nursery, where every paddle stroke reveals something new.

Remember, the Key Largo mangroves are a fragile ecosystem—stay on marked waterways, keep a respectful distance from wildlife, and pack out everything you bring in.
