Little Jonny’s Big Catch: A Family Adventure in Savannah Fishing
Chrissy Clary
Taking a kid fishing is a rite of passage that often leads to unforgettable stories—and sometimes a bit of chaos. Little did we know that Jonny would reel in a fish so large it would make headlines in our family’s storybook of family fishing adventure.
Why Redfish Are Perfect for Kids
Redfish, or red drum as they’re officially known, thrive in Georgia waters. Their striking spots and spirited fights make them an ideal target for young anglers. Watching Jonny’s eyes light up when his rod bent was proof that few things compare to the thrill of a first big catch.
Gear Up for Success
We packed the essentials—sunscreen, snacks, and a trusty rod—plus these handy camping essentials:
Camp Spork for quick snack breaks
Insulated Travel Cooler to keep drinks and sandwiches chilled
These outdoor gear must-haves keep young anglers fueled and focused.
The Big Catch
At our favorite river spot, locals joked that the redfish had jumped in the boat. We cast lines and waited. Fishing with kids can feel like herding cats, but Jonny’s focus is locked in. After a minute that felt like an eternity, his rod bent sharply. With a dramatic “I got one!” he began the battle. That boy pulled like a pro and landed a redfish too large to keep (Georgia’s 14–23" limit), turning our family fishing adventure into a conservation lesson.
Conservation Lesson
We measured and released our catch, teaching Jonny about sustainable fishing practices. Explaining size limits and catch-and-release habits fosters respect for local ecosystems and ensures future generations can enjoy Tybee Island pier fishing and other Savannah attractions.
