Traveling Internationally with Kids: A Journey of Growth and Discovery

There’s something magical about seeing the world through your child’s eyes.
There’s something magical about seeing the world through your child’s eyes. Every trip becomes more than just a vacation—it’s a chance to grow, connect, and rediscover the wonder in everyday moments. Traveling with my son, Calvin, has turned ordinary destinations into unforgettable adventures. From the buzzing streets of Tokyo to the lush rainforests of Costa Rica, our journeys have shaped us in ways I never imagined.
One of our favorite trips was to Costa Rica, a country full of vibrant wildlife and natural beauty. Calvin’s eyes lit up at the sight of colorful birds, lazy iguanas, and the excitement of zip-lining through the rainforest canopy. Afterward, we cooled off with a cold Fanta in an open-air café—one of those simple moments that somehow becomes unforgettable. These experiences have deepened our bond and broadened his view of the world.
The Benefits of Traveling with Kids
Cultural Awareness: Travel exposes children to different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. It builds empathy and an appreciation for diversity. Calvin has become more respectful and curious about the world thanks to his global experiences.
Adaptability and Resilience: Navigating unfamiliar places builds confidence. Travel teaches kids how to handle change, solve problems, and adapt to new situations—whether it’s learning a few words in a new language or figuring out a train schedule.
Hands-On Learning: No textbook can match the impact of walking through ancient ruins, hiking volcanic trails, or chatting with locals in a market. Travel makes subjects like history, geography, and science come alive.
Stronger Family Bonds: Shared adventures create memories that last a lifetime. Calvin and I often reminisce about the time we got lost in Tokyo’s alleys or watched sea turtles hatch on a beach in Costa Rica. These stories are part of our family’s story now.
Tips for Traveling Internationally with Kids
Plan Ahead: Do your homework. Choose kid-friendly activities and factor in rest days. When we traveled to Japan, my mom helped find private local guides in each city—cheaper than group tours and a far more personal experience.
Pack Smart: Tailor your packing to your trip. For single-location vacations (like cruises or resorts), you can go big. But if you're bouncing between cities, keep it light. In Japan, we had our bags shipped ahead between towns, which made a huge difference.
Stay Flexible: Kids get tired. So do adults. We once skipped a full day of activities in Costa Rica just to chill by the pool—and it made the rest of the trip even better. Build in time to breathe.
Let Kids Help Plan: Give your kids a voice in the itinerary. Calvin’s interest in WWII aircraft led us to Japan, where he could learn about the Enola Gay and visit Hiroshima. The trip helped him see the complexity of history and culture through more than one lens.
Make it Fun: Travel journals, photo scavenger hunts, silly games on trains—anything that makes the journey engaging. These little touches turn long travel days into creative adventures.
Stay Safe: Prep all documents (passports, visas, etc.), and talk to your kids about safety. We always pick a meetup spot in case we get separated—something simple, public, and easy to describe. Research local customs, pack a portable Wi-Fi device if needed, and check in with your insurance and phone provider before departure.
Cherish the Moments
Yes, traveling with kids can be exhausting. But it’s also deeply rewarding. Watching Calvin try new foods, learn about other cultures, and meet people from all walks of life has made me a better parent—and a more curious traveler myself. The world becomes your classroom, your playground, and your memory book.
And the best part? You get to experience it all—together.
