A Squid-tastic Find on the Jericho River

Charming river scenery

Field Note Submitted by:

Chrissy Clary

We had a sunny day on the Jericho River, which stretches about 12.8 miles through the beautiful Atlantic coastal plain. On the dock we spotted little a glimmer and went in for a closer inspection. It wasn’t a fish, but a small, translucent creature with tiny dark spots—was it a baby squid? That is what Google images told me, but I’m still not positive.

Have an epic story, breathtaking photo, or unforgettable travel moment? We want to hear about it!

If you think the Jericho River is “just another fishing hole,” think again. This winding waterway—nestled within the Richmond Hill Wildlife Management Area—is a treasure trove of surprises, from feathered friends to unexpected catches (yes, sometimes even baby squid!). Here’s why your next Jericho River outing should be on your calendar:

Ecological Importance

The Jericho River isn’t just a pretty face; it underpins a delicate ecosystem. Migratory birds swoop in to rest and feed, marsh rabbits nibble on shoreline grasses, and—if you look closely—tiny baby squid may flit in the brackish shallows. Pack binoculars to spot ospreys, herons, and those elusive squid hatchlings dancing beneath the surface.

Prime Fishing Opportunities

Anglers flock here for spotted seatrout, red drum, and summer flounder. But don’t be surprised if a curious squid tugs at your bait—these little cephalopods can add a playful twist to your catch. Whether you’re casting from the bank or a kayak, the Jericho River offers something for every fishing enthusiast.

Charming Scenery & Serene Vibes

Picture this: winding waterways bordered by lush greenery, Spanish moss swaying overhead, and the gentle lapping of water against your hull. The Jericho River’s banks are alive with dragonflies, wildflowers, and the occasional deer at dawn. It’s the kind of place where you can truly disconnect and let nature’s rhythm set the pace.

Accessible Adventures for All

Seasoned fishermen and first-time explorers alike will find the Jericho River welcoming. Launch a kayak, bring a pole, or simply stroll along the sandy banks. This spot is perfect for family outings, solo escapes, or a peaceful afternoon with friends.
