Lobstering in Key West: An Unexpected Family Adventure
Margret Meshy
Key West in July is a steamy mix of sunshine, salty breezes, and humidity that feels like a warm hug—if that hug were a bit too tight. My family and I arrived just in time for Florida's two-day mini lobster season, a lucky coincidence since our original plans had little to do with lobster-catching.
The official lobster season runs from August 6 to March 31, attracting both locals and vacationers eager to snag some spiny delicacies. Thankfully, Jeff—our certified captain—took charge of our adventure. He didn’t even blink when I joked that the lobsters might be avoiding us because we looked like tourists.
Chasing the Catch
The morning was a test of patience. We drifted around trying to find lobster holes, not exactly sure where to start. But once we got a tip from some folks at the marina, things turned around. Suddenly, lobsters appeared from their hiding spots, and before long, our bucket was filled with the day’s catch.
Gear Tip: A Portable Pocket Telescopic Mini Fishing Pole proved perfect for quick spot checks near the boat.
From Boat to Table
After a day of diving and searching, we had enough for a feast. The next evening, I was excited to cook the lobsters we had caught. One highlight was my son Calvin, who surprisingly excelled at cleaning the lobsters. Under his guidance, the task became less of a chore and more of a shared experience.
Cookware Pick: Fire up a Foldable Barbecue Grill on deck for the freshest lobster boil you’ll ever taste.
Conservation First
This trip also reminded us of the importance of conservation. We made sure to follow all size and catch limits, doing our part to help maintain Florida’s underwater ecosystem. It’s crucial to take only what we need and leave enough for future generations.
