Winter Fishing: Finding Success in Chilly Waters
Jeff Rickard
Despite the winter chill, fishing can still be a rewarding adventure with the right techniques and a bit of patience.
Winter fishing in the South East U.S. —a delightful endeavor akin to trying to teach a cat to fetch. You’re excited, perhaps a tad naïve, and fully prepared to embrace the absurdity of it all. This past February, I found myself at Ponce Inlet, casting my line near the Jetty, where the ocean breeze seemed to mock my every attempt. We were all set for a fantastic day of fishing, but let me tell you, the fish clearly had other plans.
It was a beautiful day—blue skies, a warm sun peeking through, and the unmistakable scent of saltwater. On that day I managed to hook a bluefish. So, while our haul might not have broken any records, it did break the ice of what could have been a rather quiet day.
Now, for those brave souls undeterred by the fickle nature of winter fishing, I’ve got some handy tips to turn your frozen fiasco into a success story.
Use Live Bait: When temperatures drop, fish become sluggish and a bit choosy. Unlike lures, live bait moves and breathes, appealing to the fish's instincts.
Opt for Small Lures: Winter means fish metabolism is slow. Therefore, go small! Lures that are just two to three inches long tend to work best.
Employ Attractants: In winter, the fish need a little extra encouragement. Use fish attractants to entice them to bite.
Keep Your Bait in One Spot: Fish are not the swiftest in winter. Patience is key. Settle in and keep your bait in one small area for an extended period.
Fish in Warmer Shallow Water: Look for the sunlit spots! Fish tend to hang out in warmer, shallow waters, especially in the late morning or early afternoon when the sun does its best to raise the temperature a few precious degrees.
Fish in Deeper Water: If all else fails, head to the depths. Many fish seek the comfort of deeper waters during the colder months. It's a bit like seeking out a warm blanket on a cold night. Ponce Inlet is a great spot, but as with all fishing, success depends on timing, technique, and perhaps a little luck.
