Setting Sail from Daytona Beach

Growing up in Daytona Beach, I thought I knew every nook of Volusia County. But when we set out at 10 AM—me, my dad John, and mom Candy—our goal was simple: reach the Tomoka River and fish the day away. With tide pulling out and channel markers nearly invisible, our lofty plans ran aground on the muddy bottom more than once. After several attempts, we waved the white flag on fishing and embraced Plan B.

Wildlife & Scenic Delights

Cruising back down the Halifax, the river came alive:

  • Dolphins surfacing playfully in our wake

  • Wading birds posing like sentinels along the shore

  • The occasional manatee quietly breaking the surface

It’s this flourishing wildlife that makes the Halifax River a must for any nature lover. For a guaranteed dolphin or manatee sighting, consider booking a guided tour—see our Winter Fishing tips for related eco-tours.

Dockside Dining at Caribbean Jack’s

We ended our river run at Caribbean Jack’s, a riverside gem perfect for refueling. Sipping cold drinks and watching pelicans dive, we realized: sometimes the best catch is a table with a view.

  4. Bring Binoculars: Perfect for bird-watching and wildlife spotting.
