If you’re itching to explore the great outdoors or experience the beautiful marshes around Savannah—but don’t have a boat—check out the Oatland Wildlife Center, a top spot for outdoor activities in Savannah. We went on a Wander ’Bout there and discovered it’s perfect for a nature hike, offering a safe, educational, and utterly scenic day in the salt marsh.

The Oatland Island Wildlife Center, located in Savannah, Georgia, is a unique environmental education facility that spans approximately 175 acres. Here are some key insights about the centre:

  1. Animal Exhibits: Home to over 150 animals from 50 different species, each displayed in large, naturalistic habitats. Watching a bald eagle swoop overhead or a river otter at play is a highlight among outdoor activities in Savannah.

  1. Educational Focus: Operated by the Savannah–Chatham County Public School System, Oatland Island emphasizes environmental education and discovery. It’s a living classroom for all ages, fostering wildlife appreciation and conservation—much like our experiences at Skidaway Island State Park.

  1. Nature Trails: A two-mile trail weaves through forests, salt marshes, and ponds. Along the way, you’ll spot marsh grasses swaying in the breeze and maybe even a heron fishing patiently at the water’s edge.

  1. Visitor Information: Open 361 days a year from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with grounds accessible for 45 minutes after exhibits close. Whether you arrive at sunrise or linger until sunset, there’s plenty of time to soak up the marsh’s magic.

  1. Community Engagement: Oatland Island hosts animal encounters, workshops, and seasonal events that connect you deeper with nature—events we’ve happily attended on past Wander ’Bouts.

Beyond the trails and exhibits, Oatland Wildlife Center is one of Savannah’s true hidden gems, offering photo ops at every turn—from sweeping marsh vistas to up-close encounters with foxes or owls.
