An official trip to Lucknow transformed into a remarkable adventure. Our team attended an insightful conference in the morning, where industry leaders shared their knowledge and experiences. As the sun set, we ventured into the heart of Lucknow, known for its rich history and Nawabi culture. The evening was dedicated to uncovering hidden spots that many travelers overlook, showcasing the city's architectural beauty and vibrant local life. Conference to Curiosity: From Meetings to Monuments

Morning came with business. We gathered for a conference, complete with slides, ideas, and professional exchange. But once the formal agenda ended, our team shared the same impulse: let’s see the rest of Lucknow.

By evening, we found ourselves at Hazratganj—streets buzzing, lights flickering, shops open late. The air carried that signature Awadhi scent: incense, food, spiced air. Vendors on bicycles carrying kebabs drifted past; onions sizzled, meat skewered, smoke curling into the dusk. We paused at a stall, tasting Galauti kebabs, their texture melting on the tongue.

Heritage & Hidden Gems: Exploring Lucknow’s Soul

The next day was fully ours. We explored Bada Imambara, with its lofty central hall, the labyrinth (Bhul Bhulaiya), and views of Lucknow’s inner city from its terraces. We moved on to Chota Imambara, its ornate chandeliers, delicate interior decorations, and tranquil courtyard offering calm in contrast to the bustle outside.

We also visited La Martiniere College, with its colonial architecture and sprawling lawns; Aminabad, a market where the corners smelled of fresh chaat and crisp jalebi, with crowded alleys carrying voices and the sounds of bargaining; and Imam Bada, with its strong presence—mosques, lamp-lit paths, and families strolling.

Food, Flavor & Street Stories

Food in Lucknow isn’t just sustenance—it’s ritual, identity. We savored biryani, rich and fragrant, layered with meat and saffron; we ate Galauti kebabs at Tunday Kababi in Aminabad, where every bite is legendary. The street corners tempted us: kebabs balanced on bicycles, sizzling grills outside tiny shops, sweet treats, and chaat in every nook.

Threads, Shops & Chikankari

Shopping became an ode to craft. Aminabad and Hazratganj offered shop after shop of Chikankari — delicate white embroidery, shadow-work, jaali, beautiful kurtas, scarves, and suits. We picked hand-embroidered pieces for everyone: ma, papa, brother, and me. The women behind the stalls would display a variety of fabrics: cotton, muslin, and georgette — some subtle, others rich. Bargaining was part of the dance.

Places like Seva Chikan, Chhangamal, Jain Chikan in Hazratganj; shops in Aminabad & Chowk; Gol Darwaza lanes — all full of choices. Authentic work often comes from older, lesser-known stalls; the premium ones in Hazratganj have higher price tags but finer finishing.

Reflections: What Stayed with Me

What I’ll remember most is how Lucknow managed dual identities: formal and elegant by daylight, glowing and spirited by night. How monuments held centuries of stories, how street food told tales of lineage and flavor, how people on the sidewalks, vendors at carts, artisans at stalls gave soul to the stones.

Practical Tips for Your Lucknow Adventure

  1. To try original Galauti Kebabs, head to Tunday Kababi in Aminabad or Chowk.

  2. For authentic Chikankari, explore Aminabad, Hazratganj, and Chowk markets are good places.

  3. The best times to stroll are evenings in Hazratganj for the neon lights and cooler air, and mornings or late afternoons at monuments to avoid the harsh sun.

  4. Wear comfortable shoes: narrow lanes, stairs in Imambaras, busy markets.

  5. Be ready for sensory overload: food smells, vibrant colors, crowds, especially in Aminabad.

Lucknow was an unexpected gift. What began as an official assignment became a heartfelt journey through culture, taste, craftsmanship, and human stories. If you ever find yourself with just a day in the City of Nawabs, let it be fully lived.
