Exploring Wassaw Island: Embracing the First Three Rules of Wander 'Bout

Chrissy Clary

Discover the joy of adventure at Wassaw Island, where experience trumps the catch. Join us for a memorable outdoor journey!

Wassaw Island is a treasure trove of beauty, adventure, and—if you’re lucky—a few fish bold enough to nibble your bait. Jeff and I launched from Butter Bean Beach Boat Ramp, braving January’s chill for a day of exploration and memories.

Here’s how we made the most of our Wander ’Bout—and how you can, too.

Before you go and read the bog, check out our video here:

Rule #1: Embrace the Unexpected

Our plan to fish quickly gave way to shoreline discoveries. Seven miles of pristine beach and twenty miles of winding trails revealed Mother Nature’s art gallery—driftwood sculptures, hurricane-tossed bottle caps, and rare shells. Even when redfish and flounder played hard to get, every muddy slip-and-slide and hidden dune became a highlight.

Rule #2: Pack Good Snacks & Gear

Hangry explorers are no fun. We loaded up on energy-boosting snacks and these essentials from the Wander ’Bout shop:

  • Portable Pocket Telescopic Mini Fishing Pole for spontaneous creekside casts.

  • Outdoor Fishing Chair with Backrest to relax between bites.

  • Foldable Barbecue Grill for fresh-off-the-dock lunches.

Rule #3: Prepare Like You Mean It

Wassaw Island lacks amenities. We packed:

  • Plenty of water, sunscreen, and insect repellent

  • A basic first-aid kit

  • Navigation tools (map, compass, GPS)

  • A valid Georgia fishing license

Check tides and forecasts before you go—tidal shifts can strand boats. For more on gear and planning, see our Tangled Redfish guide and Winter Fishing tips.

Bonus Tips for a Stellar Visit

  • Respect Wildlife: Observe loggerhead turtles and shorebirds from a distance.

  • Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash to keep the island pristine.

  • Mind Your Anchor: Secure your boat safely—rising tides wait for no one.
