Discovering Jerome, Arizona: A Quaint Ghost Town Adventure

Chrissy Clary

Nestled between Prescott and Sedona, Jerome offers history, charm, and a dash of the paranormal.

A Snapshot of Jerome

  • Elevation: 4,600′

  • Population: 460 (2023)

  • Area Code: 928

  • ZIP Code: 86331

  • Incorporated: 1899

From Boomtown to Ghost Town

Jerome’s story began in 1876 when prospectors struck rich copper deposits on Cleopatra Hill. The United Verde Copper Company sprang up almost overnight, transforming the rugged hillside into one of the world’s most productive mining operations. By the 1920s, Jerome’s population swelled to over 10,000 workers and their families. But as the high-grade ore ran out—and the Great Depression, slides, smelter fumes, and tragic accidents took their toll—the mines shut down in 1953, and Jerome earned its “ghost town” reputation.

Exploring Jerome’s Living History

  • Mine Museum: Step inside historic mine buildings to see vintage equipment, photographs, and mannequins reenacting life during Jerome’s heyday.

  • Jerome State Historic Park: Tour the elegant Douglas Mansion (built 1916) and learn how mining magnates lived above the town they helped create.

  • Audrey Headframe Park: Dare to stand on the glass‐bottomed platform hovering over a 1918 mine shaft—the only place of its kind in the Southwest.

  • Tuzigoot National Monument (Nearby): Hike ancient terraces of a Sinagua pueblo perched atop a limestone ridge, just east of Jerome.

Quirky Shops & Tasty Sips

On my visit, I lost track of time in a kaleidoscope shop where each turn unfolded a new swirl of color. Later, I slipped into a cozy wine bar—its rustic wood beams dotted with vintage bottles and local art—savoring a glass of Arizona-grown Syrah. Between sips, I picked up one‐of‐a‐kind souvenirs: hand‐thrown pottery, copper jewelry, and postcards printed with haunting images of Jerome’s past.

Ghosts of Jerome

No trip to Jerome is complete without a dash of the paranormal:

  • Jerome Grand Hotel: Once a miners’ hospital, now said to be home to Headless Charlie, wandering spirits, and even a phantom feline.

  • Episcopal Church & Old Cemetery: Visitors report disembodied footsteps and shadowy figures among the ancient headstones.

  • Spanish Flu & Mining Accidents: Tales of restless souls linger in the town’s oldest corners.
