Discover Jekyll Island: A Perfect Day for a Wander 'Bout

Chrissy Clary

Jekyll Island is the kind of place where time slows down and the charm of the South hits you like a gentle wave on a hot summer day. On a bright, sun-kissed day in early February, Jeff, his son Cole, and I, Chrissy Clary, decided to wander around this picturesque gem. And let me tell you, if you’re looking for an escape that combines a touch of history, natural beauty, and a splash of quirky character, Jekyll Island is where it’s at.

We got there at lunchtime, and we headed to the Wharf Restaurant. Located right on the water, this spot is ideal for grabbing a bite while watching boats glide by. I had the seafood platter—freshness that tastes like it was caught minutes ago—and as I munched away, I felt utterly content. You really can’t go wrong when the food is as good as the view.

If you’re planning a full day of exploration, I highly recommend packing a Compact Travel Backpack to carry your essentials and a Reusable Insulated Water Bottle to stay hydrated. These came in handy as we wandered through the island's rich history and natural beauty.

The Jekyll Island Historic District

We started the history tour at the iconic Jekyll Island Club Historic District, where we found the grand cottages. We meandered around the stately Club House and the beautifully preserved cottages, each one telling stories of the millionaires who vacationed here in the late 1800s. Imagine it: high-society folks sipping tea, fanning themselves, while trying to dodge alligators.

Kimberly, who’s been gracing the island with her presence for two decades, shared a delightful insider tip: Florida and Georgia residents might snag discounts at the Club House. Up from Jacksonville, she keeps an eye out for good weather and the right deal—when she finds the right amount of both, she escapes to the island.

Natural Wonder at Driftwood Beach

We strolled over to Driftwood Beach, where nature shows off its whimsical side. The twisted and gnarled driftwood, bleached by the sun, creates a hauntingly beautiful landscape. It’s like nature’s own sculpture park. I can’t tell you how many pictures we took. For those who love offbeat, otherworldly beaches, be sure to check out our Wassaw Island Adventure for another dose of coastal charm.

Horton House: A Step Back in Time

Next was Horton House, which is about as close to a time capsule as you can get. Built in the 1740s, it stands as a tribute to the resilience of those who lived there. It’s fascinating to think about how much has changed since then while you’re gazing at those crumbling bricks—don’t forget to take a moment to appreciate the Spanish moss hanging lazily from the trees.

Travel Tips for Visiting Jekyll Island

Getting Around

  • Bike or Golf Cart: Renting a bike or golf cart is a great way to explore the island's extensive bike paths and various attractions, offering a scenic and efficient way to travel. We saw many people biking around and next time, we plan to do the same. For travel gear, check out this Adjustable Outdoor Chair for spontaneous beachside breaks.

  • Parking: Be sure to purchase a valid parking pass, which can be done upon arrival at the entry gate or in advance online.

  • Tides: Check the tide charts before heading to the beach, as low or outgoing tides offer the best access and most space.
