A Fishing Trip in Savannah: Bonding Over Bait and Bloopers

Chrissy Clary

Fishing with my dad in Savannah felt like prepping a gourmet meal—lots of planning, a dash of chaos, but absolutely worth every minute.

With gear loaded and our goal simply to enjoy the moment, we set out to a local river hotspot—one known more for bites than busts.

Before You Go…

  • Scout the spot. I did my homework: choosing a stretch that matched Dad’s experience level and offered a solid chance of catching keepers.

  • Pack the right gear. We brought rods, reels, and essential tackle. Can’t forget the combat snacks—happy anglers are well-fed anglers.

  • Prep for comfort. Hats, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses—it’s Savannah sun, not the Great British drizzle.

  • Check the weather. A clear forecast meant smooth sailing, mentally and literally.

On the Water

Once we hit the water, I stepped back—Dad’s the captain here. He shared fishing lore (including a tall tale about wrestling an alligator), tested our patience, and enjoyed every moment. Between the peaceful waiting and the occasional tug on the line, we talked about life, family, and old escapades.

We nailed a few keeper fish that brought cheers and big smiles. Every tiny sunfish got the same enthusiastic applause as the real catches. I snapped photos (some Instagram-worthy, others hilarious), and Dad got that proud look he reserves only for moments like these.

Connection Beyond the Catch

The real catch? Quality time. Between bites, we shared old fishing stories, swapped small wisdom, and even laughed about that time Dad called my casting technique “creative.” These moments were the heart of the trip—every reel-in just punctuating the real reward: our bond.
